The Committee met on a hot Thursday evening, August 14, in Pastor's air-conditioned office and discussed several old business topics and exciting new ideas as follows:

1.Due to a schedule conflict beginning in October for Committee Chair, Terry Walker, the members agreed to meet one Sunday per month for 45 minutes immediately following church service. The meeting will be scheduled for a Sunday when we don't have communion. Terry will announce this new meeting time in church.

2.The first draft of the church directory was passed around for review by the Committee members, and it was agreed that the directory will need to be edited by the elders.

3.Terry shared a phone message received from the Sacramento Kings informing us of "Faith Night" which is in the planning stages for an upcoming Kings game. We will receive a follow-up call with the date for the event and to ascertain if our congregation is interested in participating.

4.The members discussed passing out New Testament books (we have a box full of them) to visitors when they come to our church services.

5.Darrel Fiedler reported that Michelle Mitchell, from Warm Welcome, would like a new supply of fliers to distribute. Terry will ask Erv Werner to make up 125 more fliers for Darrel to send to Michelle.

6.The members discussed the need for another clean up day to remove tree branches from the west side of the church building.

7.The members discussed scheduling the church potluck which we enjoy every September. Several dates were considered, and the members agreed to set the date a little later this year in order to give everyone enough notice and time to prepare for this picnic.

CAROLYN AND RUSSELL PULLMANN

This month I contacted Carolyn and Russell Pullmann who graciously agreed to share a bit of their lives with me for the get-to-know-you section of this article.

Both Carolyn and Russell lived with their families in the first years of their lives in this area, but on different sides of the Sacramento River. Carolyn was born at the Woodland Memorial Hospital on Cross and Third Streets and resided with her parents in Dunnigan, California, for 11 years. Russell grew up on a dairy farm located where the Sacramento International Airport is now. As often happens and which always seems so strange, Carolyn and Russell didn't meet each other until they were both residing in Redding, California, several years later.

After 11 years of living in Dunnigan, Carolyn's father decided to move his family to Alaska where they resided for two years. Then the family moved to Redding where Carolyn attended high school and college and completed the cosmetology courses required to become a hairdresser. Meanwhile, a next door neighbor worked very hard at trying to introduce Carolyn to a nice young man who worked with the neighbor in the same office. After two years of steady pressure, Carolyn's neighbor was finally successful and Russell and Carolyn met. Even though sparks were flying, Carolyn kept her plans to travel to the Holy Land on a Billy Graham tour with her girlfriend for three weeks.

The trip was thrilling and Carolyn was awestruck when she saw firsthand the hills where Jesus fed the 5,000 and traversed the Sea of Galilee where Jesus walked on water. After spending a week in Jerusalem, Carolyn and her friend even managed to squeeze in a trip to Egypt where camels were the mode of transportation to the Pyramids and the Sphinx.

Following this amazing trip, Carolyn traveled home to Redding, and Russell wasted no time in proposing to Carolyn. They were married in Trinity Lutheran Church in Redding, and the neighbor who introduced Russell and Carolyn was the matron of honor.

Russell and Carolyn settled in Fremont where Russell worked for eight years at the Alameda County Office of Education and Carolyn was a stay-at-home mom to Russ, Jr. and Stephen. I asked my favorite question as to whether they now have grandchildren, and Carolyn happily replied that they have two, a granddaughter age 12 and a grandson age 5.

But I digress, Carolyn and Russell then moved to Lakeport where they lived for 25 years until Russell retired from the Lake County Office of Education. The couple wasn't certain that they wanted to remain in Lake County after Russell's retirement, but no other location seemed to appeal to them to the extent to inspire them to sell their home and move from familiar surroundings. However, one day, as they were traveling through Woodland, Carolyn turned to Russell and asked, "Why don't we think about living in Woodland?" With this quiet inspiration, Carolyn is certain that God sent them to Woodland. They are very happily settled in Woodland, for approximately five years now, and love St. Paul's! Carolyn mentioned how they have always felt welcome and that "You know you can call on anyone to help if you are in need." I'm certain that I share the sentiments of everyone here at St. Paul's that we are pleased and thankful to God for sending Carolyn and Russell to us.

Well, we are still enjoying the warm days of summer, and after talking with Carolyn and writing this article, the following Bible verse seems appropriate:

"But blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence is in him. He will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green. It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit." Jeremiah 17:7-8 (NIV).

Peace, Sarah Walker

PRESCHOOL UPDATE

Hello Everyone, from the Preschool

Were starting our new year already. I Just wanted to update everyone on whats happening. We are glad to announce that we were able to buy new window shades for the classrooms this summer. The staff helped paint two of the rooms. Now that the walls look great in rooms 3/4, we are having the mildewed rug replaced. Our big purchase is the new Van. We are fulfilling a big need in the community by providing extended Daycare to the school age children. We have filled to licensing capacity. It is necessary to provide two vehicles to accommodate all the children. The Preschool/Daycare still has openings for 3 and 4 year olds. Be sure to let friends and family know that we fill fast. They can contact Ann anytime to enroll. A big Thank You to Russell Pullman for fixing the outside water faucet on the playground.

We are looking to a Blessed New Year.
Ann Rauhauser, Director
